I have no interest in going back to the diaspora or to Tehran. Maybe I did a few years ago, but today I don’t. Southern California is home; it’s where I can escape the fears that come with being from Tehran.
In all these years, the Iranian diaspora has never brought me any joy. And those artists who are still trapped in it must be getting something out of it. If they say they’re not, then staying in that toxic space, saturated with monarchism, must have turned them into zombies too, like something out of a zombie movie.
The Iranian diaspora in Southern California doesn’t just fail to take any weight off your shoulders; it has become so disconnected from Tehran that it has turned into its own Lion-and-Sun-waving tribe. A tribe that seems to have spent years sitting around its own fire, telling itself its own stories, manufacturing its own heroes, and applauding itself.
If I get my health back, I’ve made a plan so that by this time next year, life might be a little easier. I have a hard year ahead of me, full of “I don’t know what’s going to happen,” while living paycheck to paycheck. It was a hard summer. One of those summers that never really seems to end; the light just gets dimmer.
I wish I could go back to being a kid, sit behind that same school desk, and write in my essay: Fuck knowledge and wealth. Fuck knowledge and wealth, fuck the idea of a homeland, fuck the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Ayatollah’s kid… What matters is having intelligent, sensible parents. And I didn’t have that.
When I first came to California, an artist called me. They told me they were reading the stories I wrote. Now I know they were trying to give me hope. Later, they became a monarchist, and we cut ties.
The Islamic Republic took away generation after generation’s chance to truly live.
And today, it won again.
The curtain falls.
We are alone again.
